Nearly 50,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer annually, and 10,000 of them die each year. Having ongoing oral pathology exams can literally make the difference between life and death. At Lakeview Comprehensive Dentistry we have a keen understanding of the interconnection of oral health and the health of the rest of the body. We provide the highest quality dental treatment here in our Tavares, FL office so that you can maintain both.
After a review of your medical history, we conduct a comprehensive oral exam, looking for signs of oral pathology—diseases of the teeth, gums, salivary glands, and jaw, such as cancerous and precancerous lesions, tumors, and cysts. We may also take x-rays. If we discover any unusual growths, we may perform a biopsy. These growths are often harmless—such as a benign mole—but can also be an indicator of a far more serious situation. Based on the findings, your dentist will develop a customized treatment plan for you to help restore your health and your peace of mind.
Some types of oral pathology are due to factors beyond our control. Twice as many men suffer from oral cancer as women, for example. Family history can also play a factor. Other types of oral pathology have no known cause. What we do know for certain is that there are some habits that make oral disease more likely. If you want to reduce your chances of oral pathology, avoid using alcohol and all forms of tobacco. Eat a diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, including many fruits and vegetables. When you spend time outdoors during the day, apply plenty of lip protection (minimum SPF 30) to minimize the negative effects of the sun. In addition, avoid risk factors for human papillomavirus (HPV). By following these basic practices—and by having regular oral pathology exams from a dentist here at our Tavares, FL office—you can significantly reduce your chances of developing dangerous oral diseases.
